    On Mattering
    by Barbara Sharp

It is April 1 and my conscious mind woke before dawn as usual. That I was alone in bed, the bed I’ve shared for more than two years with my husband, was not usual. With no place to be until my 6:30 a.m. running date, I luxuriated in the dark and stretched my legs the entire width of the queen size mattress and felt pleased with time to ruminate over the events of yesterday. They are major events and as such take time to sink in like marriage or child birth.

Yesterday was the official end of my 30-year career in commercial real estate in California, Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee. No biggie, really. The question will be whether or not to renew my broker’s license when it is due to expire at the end of December. The bigger question is, if I do, what does that say? That I fear failing at a new endeavor so far removed from real estate? Or simply that I’ll always love real estate, architecture, change?

That was one aspect. The other was saying goodbye to people who I have been involved with on a daily basis for years. Of course they had become family and like family, the warts rose to the surface along with the other flaws and occasional foible but when the end was in sight, we became beautiful again to each other. The last hugs were heavy with memory, loss and tears. I felt loved and that I had mattered.

Yesterday was my husband’s mother’s funeral. She was a mentally and physically frail woman from the time I first met her and she had developed pneumonia in the nursing home in Nebraska and was unable to overcome it. My precious, level headed husband coordinated the details of her remains and kept in contact with relatives. On the way to the airport, having calculated an hour to spare before departure, he was horror stricken to realize that his driver’s license was not on him. Good thing I, Devil Woman, was at the wheel. Home we flew, defying speed limits, stop signs, stop lights and all other courtesies and laws of the road. The license was retrieved and we arrived at the airport with 30 minutes to spare. I left him at the curb to bury his mother while I went downtown to bury a career.

When his name came up on my cell phone 25 minutes later, I knew there was trouble. He was stuck with hundreds of others travelers due to inoperable airport security systems. As if the driver’s license and death of his mother wasn’t enough to twist his sensitive guts into a knot, he would now miss the flight to Memphis and the connecting flight to Des Moines. If his rental car was still available, he would have to morph into a road devil himself to make the hour drive from Des Moines to the funeral parlor in time. The passing of a life and the gathering and honoring of it matters.

The third event yesterday was that our friend Ellen, nearly 60, left for seven days on some kind of mental/emotional rehabilitation. She will be without phone or television and will be sequestered in close quarters with others in a retreat environment. She is a level-headed woman, and smart, an animal lover and our favorite movie buff. For her to admit that she was unhappy, lonely and feeling invisible and insignificant was huge for her. She took this step, quietly praying for the experience to be life changing. When I thought of her early this morning, I realized that she, too, needed to matter.

We stand together on common ground in our need to matter. Ellen matters to us, we matter to her, Jeff’s mother mattered to him, and he matters to me. I leave you now to join my running pals because we, too, matter to each other.

    What matters to you?

Introduction to Angela Grett's book MY MOTHER'S BIPOLAR, SO WHAT AM I? co-authored by Yvonne Perry

My mother’s bipolar. Wow! I said it! If you have a bipolar parent, you realize how difficult it is to make that statement. The stigma that goes with depression and mental disorder can be demoralizing. Our society often lumps people with bipolar disorder (or manic/depression) into categories similar to schizophrenia. As a result, we only recently have heard people talk about the disorder.

It used to be that the mention of any mental illness conjured images of straight jackets and padded cells. Thanks to some of our popular celebrities like Patty Duke, Carrie Fisher, Jane Pauley, Ted Turner, and Donald Trump, we have begun to put well-known faces on this mysterious disease called Bipolar Disorder. Who would have thought that these hugely successful people have dealt with the same challenges that our parents face?

On a visit to Atlanta, I met a woman named Cathi and somehow we began to talk about our mothers. The conversation began with a mutual roll of the eyes and heavy sighs. We talked about how difficult it was to have any kind of relationship with our mothers because of their behavior. It turned out that her mother was bipolar also. We stayed up talking about our mothers nearly all night. It was such a relief to be able to share the frustrations and stories about our families and our lives. Shortly after that, I began to realize how little the subject of bipolar is discussed – even by people who are bipolar. And if they aren’t talking about it, then their families certainly aren’t. I decided to write this book to help the families of those diagnosed and living with bipolar disorder. My hope is that by reading stories from other families, you will be able to feel a connection and know that you are not alone. By sharing information about the disorder from an adult child’s perspective, you may be able to have a healthier relationship with your bipolar parent and recognize the effect your parent’s illness has had on you.

The intent of this book is not to place blame for an adult child’s difficulties in life on the bipolar parent. Despite challenges we may have experienced as children, we are adults and we benefit by taking responsibility for our behavior and our own lives. I don’t mean to create a big pity party for all of us poor children of bipolar parents, but I do want to open the dialog and let you know that it’s okay to talk about your experience. Your parent has an illness that requires understanding, patience, and love, but it doesn’t require you to give up your life and your dreams in order to take care of them. You can face these challenges and still have a healthy relationship with your parent.

For those readers who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, my intention in writing this book is not to, in any way, disrespect or minimize your experience. Yours is a very difficult journey and one that you likely have not made alone. Your parents, your children, your significant others and your friends have loved you and witnessed your pain. They may not have understood your behavior and likely were not supportive simply because they didn’t have enough information or resources. By sharing our experiences, we can begin to understand the mystery of this disorder. In turn, perhaps we will take better care of ourselves and be better equipped to help you get the care thaAssets/img/Joe_Nolan.jpgre reading this book, you must have some interest in bipolar disorder whether your parent has the disorder or someone suggested that you read the book. My primary objective is to provide information for children of bipolar parents and help them realize the impact of growing up with a parent having the disorder. If you can look honestly at your own situation and behaviors that were born out of that experience, you may be able to improve your relationships and your life. Because information leads to understanding, you may be able to reconnect with your bipolar parent.

While my primary objective is to help children of bipolar parents, I also believe there are many people who are suffering with the illness because they have not been diagnosed. Some of the stories may strike a chord with you even though you don’t know anyone who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. You may be able to help someone by simply being aware of the information in this book.

You may be wondering why I used the acronym CBP (Child of a Bipolar Parent) after my name on the cover. As I began to research the books that had already been written about bipolar disorder, I noticed a lot of letters after the authors’ names (PhD, MD, PsyD). Those letters intimidated me a bit because I’m certainly no expert on matters of mental illness. My background is 20 years in the corporate world. My acronym is to remind myself that my expertise comes from being the child of a bipolar parent – the very topic of this book. Any clinical information presented here has been thoroughly researched and edited by the experts. My words, however, are from my experiences or from memories of other adult children of bipolar parents.

As you read the pages of this book, please know that I am opening my heart to you. Together, we can make the journey easier for ourselves and others.

When I Grow Up, I Want to be a Ghostwriter!
    By Taryn Simpson

When I first started out in my writing career not too long ago, I have to admit, that I didn't know much about ghostwriting. I always envisioned someone that wrote the romance novels that characteristically have hundreds of titles, but contained one or two different plots. Surely someone would tweak each novel and that was ghostwriting. How wrong I was! I had no idea back then that I would be enjoy a career as a ghostwriter today.

Ghostwriters first and foremost write material without receiving credit for it. Someone else receives the credit and the ghostwriter is paid for his or her services. This concept applies to articles, white papers, speeches, books, memoirs and anything else you can think of. If fame and attention is what you are craving as a writer, don't bother becoming ghostwriter!

So what is the allure? I can only speak for myself, but I take great pride in my writing and write as if my name will be plastered all over the book. The allure for me is that I get to meet alot of interesting people and learn all sorts of things by writing someone else's story. If a client already has a publisher interested in the book, I am truly happy for them. I don't have a yen to travel the country marketing the book. It's hard work traveling and doing book signings and so on. I prefer to write from home and meet people from virtually all over the world through the ease of the internet.

I wish I had known about ghostwriting a long time ago, but better now than never! I'm having the time of my life and love what I do. How many people can say they can't wait to go to work in the morning? I know I can!

To learn more about Taryn Simpson's ghostwriting services, please visit http://www.Taryn-Simpson.blogspot.com. She can transform your story into a page turner!

Writer Means Wearing a Multitude of Hats

I always knew that working as a writer would mean that I would need to be prepared to don many hats in order to be successful. Those of you who are writers know what I mean.

For example, have you written a book lately? Not only do you have to write the book, you need to market it, seek out publishing for it, call bookstores about stocking it, and make sure it gets listed on top retail online bookstores and so on.

And, now the rage is book videos. So, either you must get really creative and make one for your book, or you need to seek out someone that can do it for you. What about blogging about your book? That seems to be the “thing” to do. It is a nifty self-advertising web presence.

Then, there are press releases to write, newspapers to contact, TV interviews to seek, and so on. The job is never done. Really. It could be a fulltime job just tending to the marketing and publishing efforts alone.

I have to say, I have learned how do to a lot of things that I never thought I could. So, in a way, that is a good thing. Oh, did I mention that seeking out reviewers and book contests was another duty? Sigh…a writer’s work is truly never done. Some people may look at this article and think, “Why in the world would anyone want to do that for a living?” I just know I have to write.

    Books written by Taryn Simpson:

Critic from Project Greenlight critiquing Conversations with Pearl “...As a straight narrative it is touching and impressive…the action is small, personal and dramatic – the subject matter is serious and you have a flair for telling it in a readable conversational way…you have very obvious strengths…you have wit, humor, depth and perspective…”

Dan Stowell, New York Film Producer commenting on Conversations with Pearl: "What a script you have!! I agree with everything the Project Green Light person said..."

E-book customer – The Underbelly of the Human Resources Professional “I cried, I laughed so hard! This is a must-read for anyone who works in an office!

Barnes & Noble Web site reviewer Frank Craven,  "IF YOU ONLY READ one BOOK THIS YEAR...MAKE IT THIS ONE! Glittering secrets has everything that a lover of mystery, drama, suspense, and film noir could ask for. The descriptive scenarios conjured by Ms. Simpson will take your imagination to new and darker places, while creating, in your mind, vivid pictures of the troubled and disturbing world of a woman that you will soon know all too well. Without giving away the "secrets," I would suggest that you clear your schedule on a rainy day or a dark evening and turn off your phone. You won't want to be disturbed by anyone...the story is disturbing enough. When you sit down with this book, you won't be able to stop reading until the very last page."
